i am the tree that was planted
in the backyard in the ground
and as the tree grew larger
year after year the leaves came down

and all this time i've been here for you
doing anything that you want me to do

when you were small i let you climb me
on my limbs hiding from the sun
but no thanks were ever given
a single tree i am only one

now it's too bad i have a downside
i shade your backyard from the sun
it's time to do away with me

i'm always here when you need me
don't ever let me go

and now i'm in pieces in the backyard
lying by my rotting stump
right there right where you planted me
my life was lived under your thumb

i don't feel i've failed you
for i am still here
and i'm heating your house
i will always be here for you
