In Retrospect (1998)

By James Moats in Greensboro, NC

lying naked in my bedroom floor
shiny bathed and shaven once more
listening to the sounds of who i have been
a long time ago

tattooed remembrance shining through
youth and beauty's glow could fill this room
i wish that i could see you and i'm missing you
and i bet you're missing me too

i was always so hateful
it made us smile
now i'm scared and alone
and i'm too poor to be
too poor to be thrown

into a place where thoughts are like water
falling to the ground it makes a clapping sound
why must i try to taste each drop as they pound me
it's time to come down

lying naked in my bedroom floor
writing literal verses once more
shaping the sounds of who i will be
this time
