{"id":1149,"date":"2023-06-03T16:52:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-03T20:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/?p=1149"},"modified":"2023-07-03T19:25:53","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T23:25:53","slug":"fuel-cap-troubles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/index.php\/2023\/06\/03\/fuel-cap-troubles\/","title":{"rendered":"Fuel Cap Troubles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Back in <a href=\"https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/index.php\/2023\/04\/01\/a-few-easy-wins\/\">A Few Easy Wins<\/a>, I replaced the fuel filler cap (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jbugs.com\/product\/113201551A.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jbugs link<\/a>). The old one was clearly aftermarket, form over function, and the paper gasket had clearly soaked up its last bit of gas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After my next fill-up, I had the strong smell of gasoline when I pulled back in the driveway. Upon inspection, the cap was clearly not sealing and plenty of gas had sloshed around and out the top. It was puddled behind the fuel door and had run down the side of the car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I put the old cap back on for the time being. The flimsy little rubber gasket that came with the new cap was way too thin to make a decent seal. I started googling around and found that lots of places sell new gaskets for ATVs and lawn tractors, but nothing I could find specifically for this size of cap. The best thing I found was AutoZone sells rolls of &#8220;rubberized cork&#8221; gasket material (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autozone.com\/sealants-glues-adhesives-and-tape\/gasket-material\/p\/cometic-gasket-cork-gasket-material\/105372_0_0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AutoZone link<\/a>). Oddly, the package even comes with a utility knife. Also, to be fair, O&#8217;Reilly also sells it, but is a couple of dollars more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/20230603_165257_small-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/20230603_165257_small-rotated.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/20230603_165257_small-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/20230603_165257_small-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/20230603_165257_small-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/20230603_165257_small-982x737.jpg 982w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I traced out the thin gasket that came with the new cap and cut out a couple of new gaskets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/20230603_165241_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/20230603_165241_small.jpg 900w, https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/20230603_165241_small-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/medinaline.net\/tallulah\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/20230603_165241_small-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Two layers of cork gasket ended up being too thick, but one layer of cork and the thin rubber gasket was enough for a nice, tight fit.
